Story

I have always been an animal lover. When my husband and I got married, we each brought a dog into the relationship. Despite our best efforts, the relationship between the dogs in the house was tense. We tried several interventions and ended up trying to keep the dogs separated by baby gates throughout the house. This situation did not resolve until my husband’s dog crossed the rainbow bridge a couple years later.

During this time, I was volunteering and working for a kennel-based rescue. I decided to foster although I was somewhat fearful the foster and my dog might not get along. The day came when I was assigned my first fosters: Pixie and Poeby! I brought them home and was a bit uneasy the first day. By the second day, I was at ease and was truly in awe of how sweet they both were. The temperament of a pug is like no other. Neither one of them paid much attention to our resident dog - a senior, blind, deaf, wheelchair Chihuahua. By the time we received our next foster, PugBug(now JuneBug), I had gone pug crazy and had totally fallen in love with Pugs. JuneBug was a foster-fail, and she has been settling in for about a month now. Over the last few days, she has started lying in his bed next to him to cuddle and keep him company. I see a bond forming between the two of them. Seeing this, I feel the years of trauma and anxiety fading away. My heart is healing and I have fostering and adopting to thank for that.

Our life is busy, chaotic, and crazy. We didn't know if there would ever feel like there was a 'right' time to foster, but I am so glad we gave it a shot. I am so grateful for DFW Pug Rescue Club, Inc. for trusting and allowing us to foster. You never know what it will be like until you try.
